Hey everyone! I hope you are all having a rad holiday season filled with cookies and presents! To celebrate the upcoming release of Issue 2 of our sci fi comic magazine Combine I thought it would be fun to list some fun facts about my webcomic series Devil Spy!
1. I sat on this story for a long time. I first had the general idea for the story of Devil Spy probably about ten years ago. I wanted to write some sort of buddy story and had a somewhat vague idea of having this strong, dangerous but good natured and naive character finding a human who is basically everything he is not. I knew exactly what I wanted DS to look like, but Wyatt took a really long time to nail down. He went through quite a few designs before I felt like I finally got him right. I actually wish I had more of my original sketches of the characters, but alas a decade of moving around you end up losing things.
2. Devil Spy's hair is notoriously difficult to draw. There are times when I draw him and I say to myself "Yes, that's exactly what I want his hair to look like" other times it just comes out awful no matter how I try to fix it, haha. There's some sort of magic combination that I haven't quite mastered, haha.
3. Devil Spy was originally intended to be a novel. I decided after it was mostly finished that I wanted to turn it into a comic. I didn't realize it at the time, but making DS a comic meant I needed to make some changes to his character. First; which I've mentioned before is that in the novel, DS rarely removed his goggles. But getting facial expressions out of a character who is always wearing goggles proved to be very difficult. So DS lifts his goggles plenty of times in the comic even though he would really have no reason to. DS also had scars around his eyes, which I did not end up wanting to draw all the time, so I left them out of the comic. Fortunately for me, he wore his long glove things in the novel so I didn't have to worry about drawing the scars on his arms much (other than in the prologue).
Most everyone in the series is taller than DS (including Wyatt despite my inability to consistently draw that). DS is on the small side, but also he never really stands up straight (his legs are always in a slight squat). The reason for this is that DS is much more comfortable walking/standing on all fours. DS was on all fours most of the time in the novel, but fitting him in a panel alongside a character who is standing on two legs all of the time proved to be problematic (unless I wanted to always draw them from far away). His slight squat indicates his uncomfortableness with standing, he is always a moment away from putting his hands to the ground, haha. The other Mo's in the story lived around humans and were taught/picked up more human traits which further removed them from their natural wildness. DS wasn't raised that way so he tends to slip into his more wild nature much more easily.
That's all the fun facts I can think of right now, haha. If you'd like to read Devil Spy in print, make sure you subscribe to Combine ! Issue 2 comes out on Tuesday and it includes Chapter 1 of Devil Spy, and Chapter 2 of Ghost Kiss by Jake Richmond and Shutter Valley Record by Micah Berkoff. The magazine's full color and contains 45+ pages of material each issue! There's a letters section and there's still time to send us your letters, questions, or fan art: You can send them to me before Tuesday at Jaymzeecat@gmail.com and I will make sure they get included.
I hope you enjoyed these fun facts! If you have any other comments or questions, please leave 'em below. I'll answer them as long as they don't contain spoilers. Hey everyone, I got the announcement today that Deviant Art will be switching over to Eclipse permanently next month. In all honesty, I have been considering leaving DA for a while but I was hoping to wait until my Core Memberships expired (January) but this announcement has kinda given me the push I needed to decide to move on.
While I don't like Eclipse (I don't find it very user friendly and as an old person learnin' new stuff can be frustrating, haha) that's not solely the reason I wanted to leave. DA has a few features I've enjoyed in the past, mostly the organized gallery and folders which is a lot of the reason I stayed on the site. P
Running in the Same Damn Place
I finished up the last of my commissions for the year a few days ago. This marks the beginning of my indefinite hiatus from them. I've been steadily working on commissions every month for a few years now and just really needed a break. Right now I'm planning at least two months, possibly longer depending on how I feel after that time. Barring of course any unforeseen bills or emergencies I need some extra cash for.
It's looking more and more likely I'll be taking some time off comics next year as well. I've been pretty burned out for the past year or so and my drive to keep working on them is waning. I'm going to try to at least finish out t
Smiling Out of Fear
I've been thinking a lot recently about online friendships. As someone who spends the majority of their time alone working on the computer, I really do value the online friendships and relationships I have. I really appreciate all the comments and messages that you send to me. I even feel quite close to many of you even though we'll likely never meet or even hear each other's voices.
Sometimes I may not even know what your face looks like. And I do appreciate the need for anonymity online, if you never want me to see what you look like or know your first name I understand that. But I do admit I am a very curious creature. If you ever want to
Combine Magazine Closure
As some of you may have seen, my business partner Jake made the announcement today that we've decided to shutter the doors on Combine magazine. This was a decision that we made based on a lot of factors... Jake went into more detail on the post. It's pretty disappointing, as publishing Combine magazine was actually a lot of fun. Every time we had a new issue in our hands to paw through was always very exciting. I'm really sad to see it go.
I know a lot of the issue for me is that it's become increasingly more difficult the past few years to get into conventions in my area. This is the main reason why I haven't printed a second Devil Spy book
